Carl Verster lives and works in Hillcrest, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.
Self taught but with a passion for studying and learning from others, Carl’s primary choice of medium is painting in oils.
"For me it is all about light, and figures, and the souls that inhabit them. It's what keeps me coming back to the easel again and again. There is something clay-like in the way oil paint can be moulded, and the tension between accurately portraying somebody and at the same time coaxing out an intangible being, an ego, a soul and a story with brush strokes and saying something real about them, or through them, is a challenging dance I can not get enough of. My work falls somewhere between realism and romanticism, and is narrative by nature. Painting to me is an act of self enlightenment, a way of engaging with the world I live in and I aspire for the viewer to share in that, and just for a moment, fall in love with the poetry of the process and the subject matter.
